Sideshow Iron Spiderman Comiquette

May 16, 2009

After the death of over 600 civilians during a botched reality show featuring heroes tracking down villains, the government enacted the Superhero Registration Act. This law divided the heroes across the United States, forcing them to choose to support the law or to fight it. Two heroes embodied the extremes, as Iron Man took control of the Pro-Registration camp, while Captain America chose to lead the Anti-Registration camp.

This, then, is the basis of the Civil War story arc in the Marvel Universe.

Under Iron Man’s guidance, Peter Parker made the decision to make his identity public, and registered himself. This prompted Iron Man to design a new costume for Spider-Man. This new costume, using much of the Stark technology found in the Iron Man armor, features three retractable spider-like arms built into the back. The new suit offered Spider-Man advanced surveillance capabilities, extra bulletproofing, the ability to breathe under water and several other features, including the ability to make himself invisible through advanced cloaking technology.

After Spider-Man’s newer powers developed in “The Other”, Tony Stark (Iron Man) developed a new suit for Peter, which he began wearing in The Amazing Spider-Man #529. Nicknamed the “Iron Spider” costume, it is red and gold: according to Marvel Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada, “Stark’s design, Stark’s color!” The suit was designed by Quesada, based on a sketch by Chris Bachalo.

Supported by a system similar to that of Stark’s classic Iron Man design, it features many gadgets, including three mechanical spider-arms, or “waldoes,” that can be used to see around corners (via cameras in the tips) and to manipulate objects indirectly. Stark describes them as too delicate to use in combat, yet Spider-Man shortly afterward uses them to smash through the sensors in Titanium Man’s helmet. Later on during the Civil War storyline, he uses them, (reluctantly), during his fight with Captain America.

Other features include short-distance gliding capability, limited bulletproofing, built-in fire/police/emergency scanner, audio/visual amplification (including infrared and ultraviolet), cloaking device, carbon filters to keep out airborne toxins, and a short-range GPS microwave communication system. It grants the ability to breathe under water, and can morph into different shapes due to its “‘smart’ liquid metal” form. It can also “more or less disappear” when not needed. The new costume is able to look like other styles of costumes Spider-Man has worn over the years or turn into his street clothes. Part of the costume can detach itself from Spider-Man to cover an object too dangerous to touch, such as a radioactive asteroid. All these features are controlled by a computer system in the chest piece. The suit responds to mental control (The Amazing Spider-Man #530).

The armor also has a secret override that can be activated by Iron Man in case of emergencies or if Spider-Man ever switches sides (which he does in Civil War #5). However, unknown to Stark, Peter was already aware of the safety measure and had bypassed it with his own override, Password Surprise. Perhaps most sinister, Stark discovered a way to give his own Iron Man armor a “spider-sense” based on Peter’s, and the ability to give Spider-Man’s sense red herrings.

Peter wore this suit as Spider-Man’s official costume until writer J. Michael Straczynski chose to revert to the older costume. It was used symbolically to show Peter’s divided loyalties during the current Civil War event at Marvel Comics, promotional images showing him with the Iron Spider costume alongside the pro-registration heroes and in his classic costume on the anti-registration side.

And now, direct from Sideshow, iWantThatToy has managed to secure a single piece of the Sideshow Exclusive Iron Spiderman Comiquette!

Standing at 24″ H x 14″ W x 17″ D and weighing a whopping 12kg, here it is in all its stunning glory:

ISM 1

The paintwork on this beauty is near flawless and has to be seen to be believed. Look at that liquid red metal finish! Unreal!

ISM 4

Naturally, this statue wouldn’t be as meaningful without the symbolism presented by the damaged Ironman helm and Captain America shield composition. The regular edition of this piece simply won’t do.

Opened for inspection on receipt and then repacked carefully and resealed, make this minty piece yours today!

If you’re keen on getting your hands on one at SGD1000, Post ‘+1′ under comment, and email us at iwantthattoy@gmail.com your name and contact details to reserve one now! Reservation list will be contacted once a deposit of SGD500 for this statue has been paid.

Possible Large Scale Ironman Piece From Sideshow At SDCC 2009?

April 13, 2009

Spotted on the internet, an excerpt of a Q&A session from Sideshow Collectibles:

Q: Any chance of a 1:1 scale Iron Man statue based on the movie (like the one Sideshow displayed at the San Diego Comic-Con last year)? I know there is a great deal of interest on the boards for this piece!

A: We do have an exciting large-scale Iron Man product in development, which we plan to unveil at SDCC. It is not a 1:1 scale piece, but we think you’ll be impressed.

After hearing about this piece of juicy news, iWantThatToy cracked some heads and this is what we found:

making-of-the-ironman

Yummy.

Could this possibly be the large scale piece that Sideshow is talking about?

So we cracked a few more heads and came up with even more pictures!

Gawd Dayum!!!

Gawd Dayum!!!

It’s certainly going to be an expensive year for collectors. These are about the best statues I’ve seen this year.

SDCC will be interesting indeed!
